I am Ncumisa Lerato Kunana, a 21-year old BA in Politics and Communication Studies 2nd year student at the University of the Western Cape. I am passionate about reading and writing about issues that affect black women. In this blog, I will be communicating my thoughts on social issues that affect us as black women and bring about ideas from academic scholars who have spent time researching these issues. Not only will it be about long standing social issues that affect black women but it will also be about current social issues that reflect issues black women have always faced but for some reason have re-surfaced, for example; the clicks/Tresemme advertisement saga.
I want to create a community of black women that come together to teach, learn and unlearn issues that directly affect us as a people.
This blog will combine both of my passions, writing and teaching. I am a lover of unconventional teaching and I advocate for learning outside the walls of a classroom. This blog will be the outlet where I get to do both. Growing up as a teenager I was never taught how to deal with racism, colourism, body shaming, misogyny, sexism, patriarchy, domestic abuse etc. (these are some of the issues my blog will focus on). I was never taught how to respond to society belittling me to a mere object, I want to do justice to those like me and those who come after me by having these conversations. Conversations our parents were too scared to have with us. The aim of this blog is to Educate Black Women, Empower Black Women and Encourage Black Women to make their voices heard and speak out against all forms of injustices imposed unto them.
To lighten things up, I will also create lifestyle blog posts where I will visit black owned businesses in the townships and do write-ups about them and Encourage you guys to visit these places too. I am very passionate about the empowerment of black women and black people in general, a believer of circulating our (black people) money amongst ourselves. I believe the only way we can emancipate ourselves from the chains of white monopoly capital is to consciously support and buy from black owned businesses.
Please feel free to comment down below on how well you have received the introductory post and what topics are close to your heart you would like us to cover. Don't forget to subscribe if you haven't and please continue sharing blog information with your friends and family and let us grow our family because there is a new table in town and everyone has a seat with their name on it.
Love,
A Determined Black Women
